Leave ready to play. \nWHY SIFFORD\, ELDER\, AND PEETE?\nCharlie Sifford (1969)\nLee Elder (New York Times)\nCalvin Peete (1986)\nDr. Charles “Charlie” Sifford broke one of American sports’ most entrenched color barriers when he became the first Black player to earn a PGA Tour card in 1961. A two-time Tour winner and recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom\, Sifford endured relentless hostility to open doors that had never been opened before. Tiger Woods called him his hero. The game of golf was never the same. \n(Robert) Lee Elder made history in 1975 as the first Black golfer to compete in the Masters Tournament.  This was a moment that required not just talent\, but extraordinary courage. His presence at Augusta National cracked open a tradition that had excluded Black players entirely. Elder’s legacy extends far beyond his four PGA Tour wins; he changed what was possible and who belonged in the game. \nCalvin Peete didn’t pick up a golf club until he was 23 and went on to become one of the most accurate drivers on the PGA Tour. A self-taught golfer who overcame a childhood injury that left his left arm permanently bent\, Peete won 12 Tour events in the 1980s and was a dominant force at a time when Black players remained rare at the professional level.
